Wedding photographers be on the lookout for a new scam. There is a scammer that is hitting up the PPA wedding photographer directory and emailing photographers about booking a wedding. The details are vague and she claims to be hearing impaired and out of the country until close to the wedding date. I was wondering what the scam could be since she didn’t ask for any account information on my side. It looks like she mails you a fake cashiers check for more money than you have asked for and then asks you to send her a cashiers check for the difference. It looks like there are various forms and names on the emails. Please add in the comments any combinations that you have seen. I have emails from Jennifer Johnson at jenjohnson1243@gmail.com and fallyjeremih@hotmail.com. Here is the original email:
Hi, I’m Jennifer Johnson . Pablo & I will be getting married in 3 months time. We’re asking for a package list which includes 6-8 hours of shooting time amongst a few other items . Package to exclude the engagement/bridal sessions. Please let us know if you will be available for Saturday, JULY 07th, 2012, 2012.

We will see how this turns out and I will update this article as I get more information. I unfortunately responded before I found out more about the scam. I have terminated the contract and plan on sending any more information to law enforcement if she/he contacts me again. Choosing a wedding photographer is the most important decision after you say “yes.” Many aspects of your wedding will come and go but you will keep the photos for a lifetime. It is easy to get lost in the google results for “Lawrence KS Wedding Photographer.” The search returns 100s, and Lawrence is a pretty small city. Expand that search to the Kansas City Metro area and you are talking about 1000s of photographers.
Cutting through the clutter - Hands down, the best way to choose a wedding photographer is by the recommendation of a close friend. There is no better way to know how the experience will go than talking to someone with first hand experience. Even if you don’t have a close acquaintance with experience now is a good time to put out those Facebook and Twitter requests to expand your search.
Things to look for – Everyone will have their own most important requirement. Be that price, experience, photo rights, willingness to travel, etc… I am a firm believer that the total deliverable and total cost are a great place to start. Some photographers have a low starting rate but nickel and dime you for individual photos, both digitally and for prints. It is important to understand what your total cost will be once you have everything checked off your list of must haves. Photo rights are also very important. Are you allowed to share those photos on Facebook? Can you make your own prints? These kinds of potential add-ons often make inexpensive photography packages cost much more than initially advertised. Try to find a photographer that will give you a firm fixed-rate for their services. That way you don’t get caught with a photographer holding your precious wedding photos hostage.
There are 2 other things that are also must haves from your wedding photographer. They should have 2 photographers at your wedding. This allows them to capture a more diverse overview of the wedding. It also allows for equipment failure, sickness, bad positioning, etc… Equally important is that your photographers give you the ENTIRE day. The last thing you want is your photographer leaving you right at 3:00p because they have another gig and you haven’t even cut the cake yet.
